Ceredigion, Gwynedd, Carmarthenshire and Anglesey are the counties with the highest percentage of Welsh speakers, but the numbers have been declining for quite some time. Increasing the number of Welsh speakers has been one of the Welsh Government’s key aims through the “Cymraeg 2050: A million Welsh speakers” scheme. Ceredigion, Gwynedd, Carmarthenshire and Anglesey are also counties that face economic challenges as they are rural counties with low salaries.

£11 million was allocated by the Welsh Government for the 2022/2023 – 2024/2025 period to allow the four counties to work together and create interventions in order to ensure the viability of West Wales’ economy and to experiment  and trial schemes to that effect.
