We are proud to be able to announce that the Llwyddo’n Lleol 2050 project, in partnership with Mentrau Iaith Cymru, is running a brand new scheme this year to offer seven students paid work experience with their local language initiative (Menter Iaith) over the summer.

After a competitive application process, seven Welsh students from Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Gwynedd and Anglesey, who are studying various subjects at Aberystwyth and Bangor universities, were selected to take part in the valuable opportunity.

They will spend the period during the summer working with the following language initiatives: Menter Gorllewin Sir Gâr, Menter Cwm Gwendraeth Elli, Menter Dinefwr, Cered (Menter Iaith Ceredigion), Hunaniaith (Menter Iaith Gwynedd) and Menter Môn to bring project ideas from their various degree courses to be implemented at the Language Initiatives.

Jade Owen, the Project Manager for Llwyddo’n Lleol, said: “This experience is a great opportunity for the students to expand their skillsets in the workplace and gain experience in a field that interests them within their local areas.”

Catrin Jones from Menter Iaith Môn added:

“We are very much looking forward to their contributions to the activity of the initiatives.

“We run music festivals, festival clubs, workshops and chat sessions during the summer, and the crew will bring new energy and ideas to this activity.

The crew who were successful are intelligent and keen young people and we are very fortunate to have their time over the summer.”

The scheme is an effort by Llwyddo’n Lleol and Mentrau Iaith Cymru to increase awareness among young people within the language promotion field as a potential career, and inspire future graduates that it is possible to thrive in a local workplace, by making a practical difference in their native communities.

Gwenno Roberts, who will be joining the Menter Gorllewin Sir Gâr team over the summer, said: “It is not often possible to be part of researching and organising events that I have wanted to see in my local area, and so I’ve been very fortunate to receive an opportunity like this from Llwyddo’n Lleol and Mentrau Iaith Cymru on my doorstep.

“The Welsh language and the community are very important to me and so I’m looking forward to starting the job and learning more with the help of the Menter Gorllewin Sir Gâr staff.

“As a current student at Aberystwyth University, I hope this opportunity will be beneficial as I develop my skills, familiarise myself with the world of work, and open my eyes to a possible career that is entirely through the medium of Welsh.”

As part of the experience, the seven successful individuals will contribute to the Llwyddo’n Lleol campaign which aims to challenge the stereotype that there is no way to have a thriving career and social life within coastal areas of Wales.
